At a glance
Most trips start in Paris, and it earns the attention — but the TGV puts a very different France within a few hours of it. Nice and the Riviera trade boulevards for pebble beaches and a coastline you can ride between by train. Marseille is rougher and older, the gateway to Provence and the calanques. Lyon is where the country actually eats, stacked with bouchons between two rivers, and Toulouse brings brick-red squares and a student-town buzz in the southwest. Two cities in one week is comfortable; three is doable if you let the train do the work.
